Salzburg, Neighbourhood by Neighbourhood
My recommendations, sorted by neighbourhood – from the Old Town out to Liefering. One entry for every district where I actually have a place to recommend.
Where to Eat in Salzburg’s Old Town
When someone stops me on Getreidegasse and asks where to eat right now, I send them to Wiener-Philharmoniker-Gasse and the Salzburger Grill Imbiss. A classic Bosna, eaten standing up, and you’re on your way again in ten minutes. For fresh pasta I take my time instead: that’s at Die geheime Specerey on Sigmund-Haffner-Gasse, and you sit there tighter and longer than you planned.
For a whole evening Herzl on Herbert-von-Karajan-Platz is my address – you’re sitting practically next to the Festival Hall. And if it should be pizza, walk up Bergstraße to Casa Napoli.
Where to Eat in Nonntal
At TORIKO on Nonntaler Hauptstraße my pick is already in the profile: Sticky Beef Rib Mazemen. If you think ramen always means broth, mazemen will prove you wrong – the noodles come without broth, but with everything that belongs on top. For lunch it’s my shortest route to something that doesn’t taste like a canteen.
Upscale but not stiff is Paradoxon on Zugallistraße, and for a long evening take Brunnauer on Fürstenallee. Both sit in Nonntal, so you can decide at the table.
A bit further out, at Nonntaler Hauptstraße 55, is ANIMO by Aigner: a country inn at first glance, but the cooking is high-level without being stiff. My pick is the cavatelli – a dish that only works when the produce is right.
Where to Eat in Salzburg’s Neustadt
In Neustadt it’s usually about lunch for me. At taste.it on Auerspergstraße there’s a two-course business lunch that changes daily – exactly what I need between two appointments.
I order fish at Backi on Franz-Josef-Straße; the fish platter follows whatever came in that day. And at Restaurant Mirabell, FRID*EX on Fridays is my suggestion when you want to share a lot of small plates. Afterwards you’re two minutes from Mirabell Gardens and can carry on on foot.
Where to Eat in Mülln
Mülln is the district where you come down from Mönchsberg and suddenly sit inside a vault. At magazin on Augustinergasse I order the Rocky Balboa, a pastrami sandwich, and afterwards I usually stay in the courtyard for a glass of wine.
Plant-based it gets at Vegitalian on Müllner Hauptstraße: Italian comfort food, entirely vegan, and my favourite is the vegan burrito. Both places sit close to Müllner Steg, so you can walk along the Salzach afterwards.
Where to Eat in Schallmoos
Schallmoos isn’t a district you stroll through, but between errands I have two fixed points there. At Mega Star on Richard-Kürth-Straße you get the steak döner with grilled vegetables, properly filled and with meat you can taste.
At Ciro on Robinigstraße my pick is the Pizza Bufala. Stand there at lunchtime and you’ll notice that half the neighbourhood had the same idea.
Where to Eat in Elisabeth Vorstadt
Around the main station, Cosmic Pizza on Saint-Julien-Straße is my address. Dimmed lights, music, drinks – you notice the concept the moment you walk in.
It’s also where I wait for someone after a train without the wait turning into a punishment. The Pizza Bufala is in the profile there, and if you still have time afterwards: station and Salzach sit close enough to carry on on foot.
Where to Eat in Gneis
If you’re out with kids, Gasthof Hölle on Dr.-Adolf-Altmann-Straße is my simplest answer in Gneis: family-friendly, uncomplicated, with a high chair and parking. My order there is the steak with corn on the cob.
Gneis is the district where the city briefly stops: avenues, meadows, and Hellbrunn hill right next door. Being able to walk after eating is the real luxury here.
Where to Eat in Maxglan
Maxglan means a garden to me, and that’s Wastlwirt on Rochusgasse: a shady outdoor area, inn cooking that dares a bit more. My pick is the beef tartare from local beef.
Maxglan is also where everyday Salzburg shows itself: flats, workshops, and in between an inn culture that has nothing to do with tourism.
Where to Eat in Liefering
Liefering is further out than it looks, but Hubers im Fischerwirt in Alt-Liefering is worth the trip – in summer mainly for the garden. The dish in the profile is a seasonal suggestion; what’s on the table right now is on the menu.
Alt-Liefering kept its village core – church, squares – which is why you sit there as if you were in the country, motorway notwithstanding.
Where to Eat in Leopoldskron
At MARCHHART'S on Firmianstraße 2 you sit in Leopoldskron right at the pond, in summer on the sun terrace. Thai and steak in one house – handy when not everyone at the table wants the same thing.
Leopoldskroner Moos is a different thing from the pond: the moor lies behind the palace, the pond in front of the terrace. If you want to know where you are sitting, ask for Leopoldskron, not the Moos.
