Honest Conclusion

„For me, the Windbeutelbaron is one of those excursion destinations where the location alone is worth the visit. Sitting at around 1,000 metres, looking out over the Watzmann and the Berchtesgaden mountains, with a giant Windbeutel in front of you — you can hardly end a trip any better. And the Windbeutel here isn't just any dessert, it's the real signature of the house. Big, freshly prepared and available in different variations. My tip: in good weather, definitely take a seat on the terrace — Windbeutel plus mountain panorama simply belong together here."

About Windbeutelbaron

At around 1,000 metres on the Obersalzberg, the Windbeutelbaron is an excursion destination where the view is almost as impressive as the house speciality. The Graflhöhe restaurant-café has been famous for its oven-fresh giant Windbeutel for decades. The original recipe comes from a Berlin master confectioner and is still prepared personally by Hansi Ebner. Depending on the season, there are different variations — classic with cream and ice, or for example with fresh strawberries. But the Windbeutelbaron is more than just a destination for those with a sweet tooth. The menu also offers hearty dishes and seasonal specialities. In the morning, you can even have breakfast here with a mountain view. The real highlight for me, however, is the combination of enjoyment and location: from the large sunny terrace, an impressive panorama of the Berchtesgaden Alps and the Watzmann opens up. This makes the Windbeutelbaron perfect for a trip from Salzburg to Berchtesgaden, as a stop-off after a hike, or simply for an afternoon with coffee, Windbeutel and a really great view.

🍽️ My Favourite Dish

Giant Windbeutel “Watzmann”

"Naturally, at the Windbeutelbaron it has to be the oven-fresh giant Windbeutel. My personal favourite is the “Watzmann” with vanilla ice and cherries. The house speciality is made using a traditional Berlin original recipe. Light choux pastry meets creamy vanilla ice and fruity cherries — and the portion fully lives up to the name “giant Windbeutel”. An absolute must on a visit — ideally on the sunny terrace with a view of the Watzmann."
