Honest Conclusion
„For me, Magazin is not a restaurant in the usual sense, but a place you stay at: first in the vault over dinner, later in the courtyard over a glass of wine. The menu stays deliberately international and unfussy, and I like that you can drop in for a quick lunch, or just for a plate of sardines. With more than a thousand bottles on the shelves, chosen by Raimund Katterbauer himself, the recommendations never sound like a catalogue. In the evening the room turns into a wine bar, and exactly that shift is what makes it special. For me one of the first addresses when good bottles and uncomplicated food should come together."

About Magazin
The entrance on Augustinergasse leads into a space carved out of the Mönchsberg. Since 2003 magazin has used the stone cavern for a bistro, a wine shop and a deli at once. Tables sit under the vault, and in summer they spill into a courtyard with lamps on every table. The wine shelves are part of the room, not hidden in a back office.
The kitchen cooks international bistro food, seasonal and without ceremony. In autumn, pike-perch and lamb appear on the menu. Lunch runs from noon to 1.45pm, an afternoon menu covers 2pm to 5.30pm, dinner from 6pm to 9.45pm. Groups can order family style, with the plates placed in the middle of the table. The house sums up its approach with one word: nothing. No compulsory set menu, no luxury ingredients for their own sake, and a place where a single glass is reason enough to come in.
More than 1,000 bottles fill the Vinothek, the wine shop: Austrian growers such as Bernhard Ott, Uwe Schiefer and Toni Hartl next to Burgundy, Bordeaux, Rioja and champagne. Raimund Katterbauer picks the wines himself while travelling, and small parcels from those trips regularly end up on the shelf. The deli follows the same map, with Jamón de Trevélez, Tuscan salami, Ligurian olives and Portuguese sardines. Bottles can be taken home, from the shop or the online store.
Later in the evening the wine bar takes over the room, music included, and dancing happens. Groups of 10 to 50 can book the space for celebrations, and a seminar room is available too. Falstaff lists magazin in its Restaurant & Inn Guide 2026 with 88 points as a wine bistro.
