Most Beautiful Christmas Markets in Salzburg 2026

My personal selection of the most beautiful Advent markets in the city and across every region around Salzburg – from the Flachgau and the Seenland to the Tennengau, the Salzkammergut and the Berchtesgadener Land, with dates, opening hours and how to get there

Here is my selection of the most beautiful Christmas markets in Salzburg for 2026: ten markets in the city, my tip on the Plainberg in Bergheim and the smaller Advent markets around Salzburg – with dates, opening hours, locations and the festive food, plus an honest note on who each one suits.

In Advent, Salzburg has two faces: the full, glittering Old Town around Domplatz and Residenzplatz, and the small, family-run Christmas markets by the water, in the palace park or high above the city. This page sets the two side by side and adds the Plain Christmas Market, which sits on the Plainberg in Bergheim and offers the finest view of Salzburg. Each market comes with a Google Maps route and an Uber link that takes you straight to the entrance.

The big Christmas market between the cathedral and the Residenz is the heart of Salzburg's Advent. The tradition goes back to the 15th century, and you can feel it: wooden stalls, the smell of gingerbread, mulled wine and roasted almonds, and the illuminated cathedral dome above it all.

Between the stalls you'll find nativity scenes, wooden toys, ceramics and hand-knitted goods, plus Salzburg classics such as Kaiserschmarrn and baked apples. Choirs, brass groups and the Krampus runs of the Salzburger Schiachpercht'n appear regularly.

Haunsberger

„A freshly baked roll, split open and generously filled with pork, sauerkraut, mustard and warming winter spices – warm in your hand, the Haunsberger on Domplatz is the real reason I stop at the market in Advent."

  • The classic among the markets, right in the UNESCO-listed Old Town
  • Regional craft and nativity scenes, hardly any mass-produced goods
  • Most atmospheric in the evening, noticeably quieter on weekdays

In the Willibaldarkadenhof courtyard of St. Peter Stiftskulinarium the Advent becomes a winter wonder forest: the 500 square metre garden turns into a setting of warm light, fir scent and candlelight – right in the Old Town, and still far from the bustle.

The mulled wine stand serves homemade Glühwein and punch, with festive sounds and live music. Because the courtyard belongs to one of Central Europe's oldest restaurants, the stroll can lead straight on to a warm meal – booking a table is wise.

  • Beautifully decorated in the vaulted arcade – a highlight
  • A 500 square metre garden in the lovingly decorated Willibaldarkadenhof
  • Homemade mulled wine, punch and live music
  • The first market to open in the city, on 11 November
  • Five minutes on foot from Getreidegasse

For the first time the beer garden of Die Weisse turns into a winter meeting point in Advent: fairy lights, decorated fir trees and warm blankets make the traditional tavern in Schallmoos a calm counterpart to the crowds in the Old Town.

There is Weisse mulled wine, punch, mulled beer and food from the grill. The highlight is the ice-stock lane – stocks are lent on site and it is best played in a group. Anyone who wants a warm meal afterwards simply stays in the tavern.

  • The winter magic premieres in the Weisse garden in 2026
  • An ice-stock lane with hire – the highlight for groups
  • Mulled wine, punch, mulled beer and food from the grill
  • Ends already on 23 December

Charity Advent Market on Alter Markt

Alter Markt, Old Town

Mon–Thu 15:00–21:00, Fri 13:00–21:00, Sat, Sun & public holidays 11:00–21:00

Free entry

The charity Advent market is the modest sibling of the big Christmas market, and that is exactly what makes it likeable. Social organisations from the city and the province sell homemade goods, and the proceeds go to people in need.

The baroque Florianibrunnen column stands among the stalls and coffee houses around invite you to warm up. If you want to escape the crowds at the cathedral, walk two lanes further.

  • Proceeds go to social projects in Salzburg
  • Homemade things rather than souvenirs
  • Perfect combined with a detour into Getreidegasse

Around the Renaissance palace of Hellbrunn, thousands of lights glow in Advent. The path leads through the illuminated palace park to huts with craft, mulled wine and a children's programme.

For families this is the most rewarding market in the city: plenty of room to run, less crowding than in the Old Town. Hellbrunn is easy to reach by car, and buses run there directly from the centre.

In front of the baroque facade of Mirabell Palace, with the fortress behind you, stands the Christmas market on Mirabellplatz. It is more compact than the Old Town market and can be walked in half an hour.

In Advent, large paper and metal stars hang in the courtyard of the Sternbräu – hence the name. The market is small, winding and pleasantly low-key.

Around it there is beer and hearty food in the brewery tavern. Handy: it runs into early January, when the others have long been taken down.

The smallest and highest Advent market in Salzburg sits in the courtyard of Hohensalzburg Fortress. From up there you look over the Old Town, the rooftops and the Salzach – on a clear day as far as the mountains.

Get up there by fortress funicular or on foot over the Mönchsberg. It is windy and cold at the top: bring gloves, but the mulled wine up there is earned.

At Lake Salzachsee in Liefering, Salzburg families gather: small huts by the water, punch, a campfire mood and no crowds.

The Stiegl-Keller sits at the foot of the Festungsberg, its terrace looking out over the Old Town. In winter it turns into 'Winter Magic': lights, blankets and Stiegl beer instead of mulled wine alone.

If you want to end the Advent with a view and a beer, this is the spot – and it opens earlier than most, in mid-November.

My tip: the Plain Christmas Market in Bergheim

Maria Plain sits on the Plainberg in Bergheim, a few minutes above the city – and the finest view of Salzburg comes with it. The market is small and full of craft, and it runs only from Friday to Sunday plus 7 and 8 December. For me it is the most beautiful spot in Advent, precisely because it is not in the Old Town.

The Plain Christmas market lies on the Plainberg high above the city, in the outdoor area of Gasthof Maria Plain. The view from up here over Salzburg, the fortress and the Salzach valley is the real reason many prefer it to the Old Town market.

Everything around is genuine craft: wooden chests and carved nativity scenes from Bergheimer Holzkisterl, ceramics by Elfriede Dums, incense from the Weihrauchhüttn, gingerbread from backebackekuchen, organic cosmetics from MARíAS and more. Food has its own huts: potato or goulash soup, Plainer Bosna, toasted sandwiches, roast chestnuts, Kaiserschmarrn and caramelised almonds.

It is open Friday to Sunday, plus 7 and 8 December. Parking is scarce, so arriving by S1, trolleybus 6, 21, 120 or 121 is explicitly recommended.

Plainer Bosna

„A hot Bosna straight off the grill: a spiced bratwurst in a crisp, toasted Bosna roll with onions, mustard and a pinch of curry. Up on the Plainberg it tastes like Advent to me, and it warms your hands while the city glows below."

  • The finest view of Salzburg: a market at the Maria Plain pilgrimage site
  • Only Friday to Sunday, plus 7 and 8 December
  • Few parking spaces – best reached by train or bus
  • The Maria Plain basilica is right next door

My Advent walk through Salzburg

Four markets I link on foot in one evening, from Mirabellplatz to Domplatz. The times are walking time only, without stopping; however long you stay at each market comes on top.

  1. Christmas Market on Mirabellplatz

Start in front of Mirabell Palace – the most space here.

↓ About 10 minutes on foot (roughly 750 m) to the Sternbräu

  2. Star Advent at the Sternbräu

Small, winding and quiet in the arcade courtyard.

↓ About 3 minutes (roughly 200 m) to Alter Markt

  3. Charity Advent Market on Alter Markt

Handmade things from social organisations, no crowds.

    ↓ About 5 minutes (roughly 350 m) to Domplatz

  4. Salzburg Christmas Market on Domplatz & Residenzplatz

The big market to finish – and my food stop: the Haunsberger on Domplatz.

Around 1.3 km and 15 to 20 minutes of pure walking time – with stops it becomes a whole evening.

The round only works while the opening hours overlap: the market on Mirabellplatz opens earliest (Sunday to Thursday from 10:00, closing at 20:00), Star Advent closes at 19:00 Sunday to Thursday, Domplatz and Residenzplatz at 20:30. Best to start between 15:00 and 16:00.

Advent Market in the Centre

Thalgau

28 – 29 November 2026

With children

The Advent market in Thalgau lasts just one weekend, the Saturday and Sunday at the end of November. That is exactly why it feels unpolished: a village market with craft and punch, walked through in an hour and still with something found.

Köstendorf Christmas Market

Köstendorf

28 – 29 November 2026

The Köstendorf Christmas market is one of the smaller ones in the Flachgau, with stalls around the village centre and a lot of homemade things. For me it is a market to wander through, not to tick off a list.

Salzburg Christmas markets on Instagram

In my latest post I capture the Advent mood in the Old Town: lights, stalls and mulled wine in motion.

My tips for your visit

Arrive without a car

There is no parking in the Old Town and only a little at Maria Plain. I would take the trolleybus, the suburban train or walk – every market sits in or at the edge of the centre.

Dress warm

Most markets are outdoors, and the wind picks up on the fortress and the Plainberg. I would pack gloves, a hat and sturdy shoes – they make the difference on a long evening.

Bring cash

The small charity and craft stalls in particular prefer cash. Mulled wine comes with a deposit on the cup – don't lose the token.

Cup deposit

Mulled wine and punch come in a mug, and a deposit is charged on it. Return the mug at the same stall and you get the deposit back – that applies at every market here.

With children

Hellbrunn, Lake Salzachsee and Maria Plain are more relaxed than Domplatz: more space, fewer crowds, shorter walks between the stalls.

Check the times

Some markets open only at weekends or close as early as 24 December. Always look up the opening hours before travelling further.

Frequently asked questions about the Christmas markets

When do the Salzburg Christmas markets open in 2026?

The first Christmas markets start in mid-November: the Winter Wonder Forest at St. Peter opens on 11 November, Winter Magic at the Stiegl-Keller on 14 November. The big Salzburg Christmas Market on Domplatz and Residenzplatz begins on 19 November, as do Hellbrunn, Mirabellplatz and Star Advent. The market at Lake Salzachsee opens on 21 November, the Plain Christmas Market on 20 November and the one at Hohensalzburg Fortress on 27 November. Around Salzburg, the Hallein Christmas Market starts on 13 November, Zell am See and Kitzbühel follow on 18 November and the Winter Wonderland at Schloss Mondsee on 19 November.

Which Advent markets around Salzburg are worth the trip?

For a half-day out I would think in three directions. South: the Gastein valley with Bad Hofgastein and Dorfgastein, Zell am See on the town square, Kaprun Castle and, in the Lungau, Tamsweg and Mauterndorf – all with mountain views and quiet on weekdays. East into the Salzkammergut: Mondsee with its Advent market and the Winter Wonderland in the palace courtyard, Bad Ischl in the Trinkhalle and the single Advent day in Hallstatt on 8 December. And across the border: Bad Reichenhall on Rathausplatz and Berchtesgaden, one of the few markets that stays open until 3 January. If you want craft and shelter from the weather, head to the Alte Saline in Hallein – every stall there is under a roof.

Which Christmas market is the most beautiful in Salzburg?

It depends on what you are looking for. For the classic picture with the cathedral dome, choirs and crafts, the Christmas Market on Domplatz and Residenzplatz is my first choice. If you prefer it quieter and more family-run, head to Hellbrunn or Lake Salzachsee. And for the best view, go up to Maria Plain: the Plain Christmas Market lies in Bergheim high above the city.

Which Christmas market works for a date?

For a date I would pick St. Peter or Star Advent: the Willibaldarkaden courtyard is warmly lit and quiet despite the Old Town, and Star Advent sits small and winding in the Sternbräu arcade courtyard. If you want the view as well, go up to Maria Plain or settle into the Stiegl-Keller above the Old Town.

Which markets are open on Christmas and New Year's Eve?

On 24 December most markets close in the afternoon, and Hellbrunn ends on 24 December altogether. On 25 and 26 December and on New Year's Eve, the Christmas Market on Domplatz and Residenzplatz, St. Peter, Star Advent and the market on Mirabellplatz are open with special hours. Please still check the times on the market's own page before you go.

Which markets are still open after Christmas?

Beyond 25 December, the Christmas Market on Domplatz and Residenzplatz runs until 1 January, St. Peter and Star Advent until 6 January, and the market on Mirabellplatz until 31 December. Around Salzburg, Fuschl am See stays open until 1 January, and Berchtesgaden and the Winter Wonderland at Schloss Mondsee until 3 January. All others end between 20 and 24 December – the fortress on 20, Lake Salzachsee on 21, Alter Markt on 22, Die Weisse and the Stiegl-Keller on 23, and Hellbrunn on 24 December.

Is there an entrance fee?

Almost nowhere: the Christmas Market on Domplatz and Residenzplatz, St. Peter, Alter Markt, Mirabellplatz, Star Advent, Lake Salzachsee, the Stiegl-Keller and the Plain Christmas Market are all free. Two exceptions: Hellbrunn Advent Magic costs €8.00 per person, free from 19:00. Children up to 6 never pay, it is free for everyone on 24 December, and entry includes a voucher for a hot drink. At Hohensalzburg Fortress the footpath over the Mönchsberg is free, while the funicular and the interior rooms cost extra.

How much do food and drinks cost?

Confirmed stall prices for the 2026 season have not been published, so I do not name any amounts. Two things are separate and certain: the entrance fee (€8.00 at Hellbrunn, the funicular at the fortress) and the cup deposit on mulled wine or punch, which you get back when you return the cup. Everything else differs by market, stall and portion size – single prices say nothing about the price level of a whole market.

Which Christmas market works well with children?

Hellbrunn, Lake Salzachsee in Liefering and Maria Plain are easier with children than Domplatz: more space, fewer crowds and short walks between the stalls. At Hellbrunn the whole palace park is illuminated as well, and at Lake Salzachsee there is a craft afternoon on Saturdays and a visit from the Christ Child on Advent Sundays.

Can I bring my dog?

The markets handle this differently; there is no single answer. On Domplatz and Residenzplatz dogs are allowed on a leash and with a muzzle under the market rules in force since 1 November 2026. At Hellbrunn Advent Magic they are welcome and must stay on a leash throughout, no muzzle required. At the fortress they may enter the outdoor areas, and ride the funicular only with leash and muzzle. At the Stiegl-Keller and in the beer garden of Die Weisse, well-behaved dogs are welcome according to the owners. On Mirabellplatz a leash is required – the organiser says the city's new rules have not yet been applied there.

Which markets are accessible?

The Christmas Market on Domplatz and Residenzplatz is the most accessible: the organiser states it is fully step-free. The market on Mirabellplatz is level and can be visited with a wheelchair or pram. At Hellbrunn most of the site is accessible, but some paths run over gravel and natural ground; accessible parking, Eurokey entry and accessible toilets are available. At the fortress the courtyard can be reached by lift, while the footpath over the Mönchsberg is steep. The Stiegl-Keller and Die Weisse ask guests to contact the team for individual information.

Which market is best when it rains?

I cannot call any of the markets rainproof, because the stalls stand outdoors. Hellbrunn Advent Magic takes place in any weather according to the organiser, with some paths over gravel. If you want to sit somewhere warm during rain, the tavern at the Stiegl-Keller or the Stiftskulinarium St. Peter are indoors – both are restaurants, so booking ahead makes sense. The organisers do not state whether individual market areas are covered.

Which markets can be combined on foot?

Mirabellplatz, Star Advent, Alter Markt and the Christmas Market on Domplatz and Residenzplatz form one round: about 1.3 km and 15 to 20 minutes of pure walking time, without stops. St. Peter sits right next to Domplatz anyway. The round only works while the opening hours overlap – Star Advent closes at 19:00 from Sunday to Thursday.

When is it least crowded?

Weekdays in the early evening are calmest, as is the time right after opening in the afternoon. At weekends and on Advent weekends Domplatz and Residenzplatz are busiest – then St. Peter, Alter Markt or the Sternbräu courtyard are the quieter detours.

How do I get there and where can I park?

There is no parking in the Old Town and only a little at Maria Plain. Trolleybus, suburban train and walking are the easiest options – Domplatz, Residenzplatz, Alter Markt, Sternbräu and Mirabellplatz are minutes apart. Bus line 25 runs from the main station to Hellbrunn, lines 1 to 6 go to Mirabellplatz, and Maria Plain is served by S1, trolleybus 6 and 21, and bus 120 or 121. For the markets around Salzburg, train and bus are the easiest choice: Hallein, St. Johann, Zell am See, Bad Ischl and Kitzbühel have a station in the village, while Mondsee, Fuschl am See and the Berchtesgadener Land are about 30 to 60 minutes by bus from Salzburg. Every market on this page has a button with the route in Google Maps and an Uber link straight to the entrance.

Can I pay by card at the Christmas markets?

I cannot confirm that for every stall. At Hellbrunn Advent Magic card payment is possible at many stalls, some exhibitors take cash only, there is an ATM on site, and entry can be paid by card as well. At the small charity and craft stalls I would bring cash – and don't lose the deposit token for the mulled wine cup.

Still hungry after the market?

Warm kitchens, taverns and cafés in the Old Town and the surrounding area – all checked by me.
