Most Beautiful Christmas Markets in Salzburg 2026

My personal selection of the most beautiful Advent markets in the city and around Salzburg – with dates, opening hours and how to get there

Here is my selection of the most beautiful Christmas markets in Salzburg for 2026: dates, opening hours, locations and the festive food at each market, plus an honest note on who each one suits.

In Advent, Salzburg has two faces: the full, glittering Old Town around Domplatz and Residenzplatz, and the small, family-run Christmas markets by the water, in the palace park or high above the city. This page sets the two side by side and adds the most beautiful Christmas markets around Salzburg – first of all the Plain Christmas Market at Maria Plain, with the finest view of the city. Each market comes with a Google Maps route and an Uber link that takes you straight to the entrance.

My personal picks of the most beautiful Christmas markets in the city

I took the dates, opening hours and entry prices from the markets' official pages, as of 1 November 2026.

Salzburg Christmas Market

Domplatz & Residenzplatz, Old Town

19 November 2026 – 1 January 2027

Mon–Thu 10:00–20:30, Fri 10:00–21:00, Sat 09:00–21:00, Sun & public holidays 09:00–20:30 · 24 Dec 09:00–15:00, 25/26 Dec 11:00–18:00, 31 Dec 10:00–18:00 (food stalls until 01:00), 1 Jan 11:00–18:00

Free entry

The big Christmas market between the cathedral and the Residenz is the heart of Salzburg's Advent. The tradition goes back to the 15th century, and you can feel it: wooden stalls, the smell of gingerbread, mulled wine and roasted almonds, and the illuminated cathedral dome above it all.

Between the stalls you'll find nativity scenes, wooden toys, ceramics and hand-knitted goods, plus Salzburg classics such as Kaiserschmarrn and baked apples. Choirs, brass groups and the Krampus runs of the Salzburger Schiachpercht'n appear regularly.

  • The classic among the markets, right in the UNESCO-listed Old Town
  • Regional craft and nativity scenes, hardly any mass-produced goods
  • Most atmospheric in the evening, noticeably quieter on weekdays

Winter Wonder Forest at St. Peter

Willibaldarkadenhof, St. Peter Stiftskulinarium

11 November 2026 – 6 January 2027

Mon–Thu 13:30–22:00, Fri–Sun 12:30–22:00 · 24 Dec 12:00–18:00

Free entry

In the Willibaldarkadenhof courtyard of St. Peter Stiftskulinarium the Advent becomes a winter wonder forest: the 500 square metre garden turns into a setting of warm light, fir scent and candlelight – right in the Old Town, and still far from the bustle.

The mulled wine stand serves homemade Glühwein and punch, with festive sounds and live music. Because the courtyard belongs to one of Central Europe's oldest restaurants, the stroll can lead straight on to a warm meal – booking a table is wise.

  • Beautifully decorated in the vaulted arcade – a highlight
  • A 500 square metre garden in the lovingly decorated Willibaldarkadenhof
  • Homemade mulled wine, punch and live music
  • The first market to open in the city, on 11 November
  • Five minutes on foot from Getreidegasse
Plain Christmas market on the Plainberg near Salzburg

Plain Christmas Market

Gasthof Maria Plain, Plainbergweg 41, 5101 Bergheim

20 November 2026 – 20 December 2026

Fri 16:00–20:00, Sat 14:00–20:00, Sun 11:30–19:30 · Mon 7 Dec 14:00–20:00, Tue 8 Dec 11:30–19:30

Free entry

The Plain Christmas market lies on the Plainberg high above the city, in the outdoor area of Gasthof Maria Plain. The view from up here over Salzburg, the fortress and the Salzach valley is the real reason many prefer it to the Old Town market.

Everything around is genuine craft: wooden chests and carved nativity scenes from Bergheimer Holzkisterl, ceramics by Elfriede Dums, incense from the Weihrauchhüttn, gingerbread from backebackekuchen, organic cosmetics from MARíAS and more. Food has its own huts: potato or goulash soup, Plainer Bosna, toasted sandwiches, roast chestnuts, Kaiserschmarrn and caramelised almonds.

It is open Friday to Sunday, plus 7 and 8 December. Parking is scarce, so arriving by S1, trolleybus 6, 21, 120 or 121 is explicitly recommended.

  • The finest view of Salzburg: a market at the Maria Plain pilgrimage site
  • Only Friday to Sunday, plus 7 and 8 December
  • Few parking spaces – best reached by train or bus
  • The Maria Plain basilica is right next door

Winter Magic at Die Weisse

Die Weisse, Rupertgasse 10, Schallmoos

19 November 2026 – 23 December 2026

Mon–Fri 14:00–20:00, Sat 13:00–20:00

Free entry

For the first time the beer garden of Die Weisse turns into a winter meeting point in Advent: fairy lights, decorated fir trees and warm blankets make the traditional tavern in Schallmoos a calm counterpart to the crowds in the Old Town.

There is Weisse mulled wine, punch, mulled beer and food from the grill. The highlight is the ice-stock lane – stocks are lent on site and it is best played in a group. Anyone who wants a warm meal afterwards simply stays in the tavern.

  • The winter magic premieres in the Weisse garden in 2026
  • An ice-stock lane with hire – the highlight for groups
  • Mulled wine, punch, mulled beer and food from the grill
  • Ends already on 23 December

Charity Advent Market on Alter Markt

Alter Markt, Old Town

20 November 2026 – 22 December 2026

Mon–Thu 15:00–21:00, Fri 13:00–21:00, Sat, Sun & public holidays 11:00–21:00

Free entry

The charity Advent market is the modest sibling of the big Christmas market, and that is exactly what makes it likeable. Social organisations from the city and the province sell homemade goods, and the proceeds go to people in need.

The baroque Florianibrunnen column stands among the stalls and coffee houses around invite you to warm up. If you want to escape the crowds at the cathedral, walk two lanes further.

  • Proceeds go to social projects in Salzburg
  • Homemade things rather than souvenirs
  • Perfect combined with a detour into Getreidegasse
Hellbrunn Advent Magic in front of the illuminated Hellbrunn Palace

Hellbrunn Advent Magic

Hellbrunn Palace, Hellbrunner Straße 34

19 November 2026 – 24 December 2026

Tue–Fri 13:00–20:00, Sat, Sun & public holidays 10:00–20:00 · closed Mondays (except 21 Dec 13:00–20:00) · 24 Dec 10:00–14:00

€8.00 entry, free from 19:00Children up to 6 free, free for everyone on 24 Dec. Entry includes a voucher for a hot drink.

Around the Renaissance palace of Hellbrunn, thousands of lights glow in Advent. The path leads through the illuminated palace park to huts with craft, mulled wine and a children's programme.

For families this is the most rewarding market in the city: plenty of room to run, less crowding than in the Old Town. Hellbrunn is easy to reach by car, and buses run there directly from the centre.

  • Illuminated palace park to stroll through
  • Lots of space for children, ideal in the afternoon
  • Closes already on 24 December

Christmas Market on Mirabellplatz

Mirabellplatz, in front of Mirabell Palace

19 November 2026 – 31 December 2026

Sun–Thu 10:00–20:00, Fri & Sat 10:00–21:00 · 24 Dec 10:00–15:00, 25/26 Dec 11:00–18:00, 27–30 Dec 10:00–19:00, 31 Dec 10:00–19:00 (food stalls longer)

Free entry

In front of the baroque facade of Mirabell Palace, with the fortress behind you, stands the Christmas market on Mirabellplatz. It is more compact than the Old Town market and can be walked in half an hour.

If you prefer the Salzach side: the river is three minutes away and the Staatsbrücke five – a good start to the evening.

  • Fortress panorama straight from the market
  • Open until New Year's Eve – the only market in the city
  • Short walk to the river, the Old Town and city buses

Star Advent at the Sternbräu

Sternbräu, Griesgasse 23

19 November 2026 – 6 January 2027

Sun–Thu 11:00–19:00, Fri & Sat 11:00–20:30 · 24 & 31 Dec 10:00–15:00 · 1–6 Jan daily 11:00–18:00

Free entry

In Advent, large paper and metal stars hang in the courtyard of the Sternbräu – hence the name. The market is small, winding and pleasantly low-key.

Around it there is beer and hearty food in the brewery tavern. Handy: it runs into early January, when the others have long been taken down.

  • Hidden courtyard in the middle of the Old Town
  • Runs until 6 January
  • Right next to restaurants and a beer hall

Advent Market at Hohensalzburg Fortress

Hohensalzburg Fortress, Mönchsberg 34

27 November 2026 – 20 December 2026

On Advent weekends Fri, Sat & Sun, and on 7 & 8 Dec, 11:00–19:00 · reached by the fortress funicular or on foot via the Mönchsberg

Free entry to the marketThe footpath over the Mönchsberg is free – the funicular and the interior rooms cost extra.

The smallest and highest Advent market in Salzburg sits in the courtyard of Hohensalzburg Fortress. From up there you look over the Old Town, the rooftops and the Salzach – on a clear day as far as the mountains.

Get up there by fortress funicular or on foot over the Mönchsberg. It is windy and cold at the top: bring gloves, but the mulled wine up there is earned.

  • Far-reaching views over the whole Old Town
  • Few stalls, but a special atmosphere
  • Open only for a few weeks – 27 Nov to 20 Dec

Advent Market at Lake Salzachsee

Liefering, Salzachsee

21 November 2026 – 21 December 2026

Fri 14:00–20:00, Sat & Sun 11:00–20:00

Free entry

At Lake Salzachsee in Liefering, Salzburg families gather: small huts by the water, punch, a campfire mood and no crowds.

In Advent the lake is not for swimming but a backdrop – the path around the water is short and combines well with a walk.

  • Market right by the water
  • Very family-oriented, many locals
  • Parking available nearby

My insider tip: Winter Magic at the Stiegl-Keller

If you want Advent with a view, head to the Stiegl-Keller: the terrace at the foot of the fortress looks over the Old Town, and instead of crowds you get beer, warm blankets and hearty food.

Winter Magic at the Stiegl-Keller

Stieglkeller, Festungsgasse 10

14 November 2026 – 23 December 2026

Tue–Fri 12:00–22:00, Sat, Sun & public holidays 11:00–22:00

Free entry

The Stiegl-Keller sits at the foot of the Festungsberg, its terrace looking out over the Old Town. In winter it turns into 'Winter Magic': lights, blankets and Stiegl beer instead of mulled wine alone.

If you want to end the Advent with a view and a beer, this is the spot – and it opens earlier than most, in mid-November.

  • Terrace with a view over the Old Town
  • Beer and hearty Austrian food instead of just punch
  • One of the first to open, on 14 November

More Christmas markets I recommend

From Lake Wolfgangsee through the Salzburger Seenland to the Fuschlsee valley – here are the dates at a glance. Entry is free at every one of them.

Salzburg Christmas markets on Instagram

In my latest post I capture the Advent mood in the Old Town: lights, stalls and mulled wine in motion.

My tips for your visit

Arrive without a car

There is no parking in the Old Town and only a little at Maria Plain. I would take the trolleybus, the suburban train or walk – every market sits in or at the edge of the centre.

Dress warm

Most markets are outdoors, and the wind picks up on the fortress and the Plainberg. I would pack gloves, a hat and sturdy shoes – they make the difference on a long evening.

Bring cash

The small charity and craft stalls in particular prefer cash. Mulled wine comes with a deposit on the cup – don't lose the token.

With children

Hellbrunn, Lake Salzachsee and Maria Plain are more relaxed than Domplatz: more space, fewer crowds, shorter walks between the stalls.

Check the times

Some markets open only at weekends or close as early as 24 December. Always look up the opening hours before travelling further.

Frequently asked questions about the Christmas markets

Still hungry after the market?

Warm kitchens, taverns and cafés in the Old Town and the surrounding area – all checked by me.
